OUR STORY

Our school is over 50 years old and has a beautiful rural setting with large fields and our own farm directly beside the school.  The school has many new classrooms and new technology which assists the learning process.  We have a large number of students who travel to school each day from all over the Central Hawke’s Bay region.

HISTORY - 1959–2015

BEGINNINGS

Central Hawke’s Bay College opened in 1959 after a merger with Waipukurau and Waipawa District High Schools. The first Principal was Mr Geoff Sharp. The beginning roll of 347 first attended school on Tuesday 3rd February 1959.

DEVELOPMENTS

The College grew steadily over the first 25 years and substantial new buildings were added to the existing Waipukurau DHS facilities. The largest roll attained was in 1984 with 920 students. Mr Bob Foster took over as Principal in 1970 and he led the school until retirement in 1983. Mr Jeremy Ballantyne was Principal from 1983 to 2001. The fourth Principal was Richard Schumacher 2002 – 2010 followed by Mr Dawid deVilliers in 2011 and the current Principal Mr Lance Christiansen started in 2012.

TRADITIONS

Many of the features of the 21st Century Central Hawke’s Bay College were forged in first few years including Fryer Cup, House competitions and a tradition of success and ‘achieving with honour’.
