Message from the Principal – 03 April 2025

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Last week we were very fortunate to have a number of our community partners and other supporters from the community involved in our “Reality Check” programme for Senior Students. Thank you so much to Complete Coaching Hawke’s Bay, Jobs CHB, Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea, Sport Hawke’s Bay, Central HB Connect Youth and Community Trust, Central Hawke’s Bay Budget Services, CHB District Council, Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce, EIT Hawke’s Bay, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga Youth Services, Property Brokers Waipukurau, MSD Study Link, Hawke's Bay Community Law and AA Waipukurau.

The Year 12 and 13 students were asked to complete their own “Reality Check” on how prepared they currently are for life after school.  Having such an opportunity allows the students to understand the support on offer and the things they need to have when they leave school for their future goals. We are certainly very pleased with the support of the community in making this event possible and delighted to have a large number of former CHBC students returning to their Kura to support our current students. This week our Year 12 students were involved in the RYDA programme, related to road safety.  Thank you to Rotary for their support for this day which is so important in our rural community and supports our driver programme with CHB Connect.

Our Year 9 students took part in an activity that involved our English and Humanities Faculties. This related to a book, written by former student Brian Morris, relating to local stories that link to the local area and history. Thank you to Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea, in particular Phillip Morris and Matua Conrad Nepe Apatu, for your support in developing and supporting this project, it was thoroughly well received by everyone.

The saying that it takes a village to raise a child has never been shown to be so true for our students.  It is wonderful to deal with so many positive and supportive members of the local community. This group includes many of our partners who provide support and assistance over the year to students, staff and parents. Our students, staff and caregivers are very fortunate to have you supporting us.

Non Uniform Day

There will be a non uniform day next Tuesday 8th April.  Gold coin donation.  Proceeds to support Student Council initiatives.

Sabbatical Leave

From the start of Term Two this year, I will be away on sabbatical leave.  Mr Garth Sherwood will be Acting Principal in my absence. I thank the Board for their support of my sabbatical. The school is fortunate that we have Mr Sherwood with his wealth of experience to fulfil the principal’s roll while I am away. My sabbatical will take in several educational conferences and include refreshment leave. I will be back in Term Three, however I look forward to keeping track of our amazing school during my absence.

Former Student Excelling

Congratulations to former student Fiona Bourke who has been selected to join USRowing from Rowing New Zealand as the High Performance Sculling Coach.

"I'm excited to join the coaching staff at USRowing as the High Performance Sculling Coach,” said Fiona Bourke. “It's an honour to contribute to the mission of creating a sustainable, athlete-centred, coach-driven, and service-supported high performance program. USRowing has a rich history of success, and I look forward to collaborating with the talented athletes, coaches, and staff across the American rowing community to elevate sculling on the international stage."

SCHOOL VALUES: ~ EXCELLENCE ~ HIRANGA ~

“He kai kei aku ringa” - There is food at the end of my hands.

Said by a person who can use his basic abilities and resources to create success. Making the most of your abilities is a key to success in life.  Our students are encouraged to do this through their classwork and through the various activities they involve themselves in during the school year.
